Pepsi Refresh Competition - please vote for the Fitness Clinic for Individuals with Disabilities!

Commencing July 1st the voting for the Pepsi Refresh Competition for the month begins. The Fitness Clinic for Individuals with Disabilities is on the ballot for $ 25,000 in the Health category. Your can vote from an email once a day for the entire month July 1-31. The projects with the most votes get funded. We would appreciate you voting daily from all your email accounts.


The Fitness Clinic currently in its 27th year serves 105 individuals with severe physical disabilities through an individualized prescribed exercise program. The individuals (age 2-98) have disabilities that include; stroke, multiple sclerosis, acquired brain injury, spinal cord in injury, amputees, and Lou Gehrig’s and Parkinson’s diseases. In addition the Fitness Clinic trains over 280 interns a year. The Fitness Clinic is and has been a self-supported program for all of its 27 years.

 

Updated Exercise and Physical Activity Tips for Older Adults Now Available on NIHSeniorHealth Site

Older adults who are interested in becoming physically active, restarting a lapsed exercise regimen or getting more benefits from their current exercise program can check out the updated Exercise and Physical Activity for Older Adults topic on NIHSeniorHealth, a website designed especially for older adults.

The Newman YMCA receives grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation

The Newman YMCA in Seekonk Massachusetts has received a $17,000.00 grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, to aid it in its plan to open a center of excellence for people with physical impairments. The money will be combined with another grant from the Bristol County Savings Charitable Foundation to purchase specialty equipment to add to their Wellness Center. One of the machines that will be purchased is a Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bike, from Restorative Therapies, which as been shown to help individuals with Paralysis due to Paraplegia, Quadriplegia and stroke. Recent studies have also shown this therapy to help MS patients. The Newman YMCA is the only membership based facility within a 40 mile radius to offer this particular therapy. The Newman YMCA is also a member of the Inclusive Fitness Coalition (IFC) and as such is committed in its mission to facilitate the lives of all individuals regardless of physical challenges.

The Newman YMCA services communities in Seekonk, Rehoboth and East Providence, the building facilities are all ground level, fully handicap accessible and the front entrance as well as the Wellness Center entrance is equipped with automatic doors. The pool is equipped with a chair lift for those wishing to benefit from aqua therapy.
