South Shore Fitness

Description: 

South Shore Fitness is a 10,000 square foot, state-of-the-art fitness facility located on the South Shore of Long Island.  In addition to standard personal training and group exercise classes, they offer a unique and sophisticated Post Rehab/Medical Exercise Program.  Clients are referred to the program by their physician, chiropractor, orthopedist, cardiac surgeon, pediatrician, obstetrician and other members of the medical community.  They work one-on-one with each client to develop a program of exercise that enables them to achieve their fitness goals in a safe and effective manner.  South Shore Fitness maintains regular contact with their doctor providing progress reports, obtaining medical clearance and become a part of the client’s medical management team.

 

The goal of the Post Rehab/Medical Exercise Division of South Shore Fitness is to provide clients with chronic or acute medical conditions or disabilities, and those who have finished, or in conjunction with, a recommended course of treatment after surgery or other medical treatment. They specialize in musculo-skeletal conditions, cancer, post cardiac rehabilitation, fibromyalgia, gait and balance training, diabetes, hypertension, Parkinson's disease, post polio syndrome and more.

National Council On Strength and Fitness

Description: 

The National Council on Strength and Fitness serves as a leadership organization within the fitness industry, participating in national coalitions, legislation, and engaging in related public service to promote a healthier nation. The NCSF Board for Certification offers the NCCA accredited Certified Personal Trainer program for individuals that meet the professional competency standards for safe and effective practice in the fitness industry.

It is the mission of the National Council on Strength and Fitness to provide professionals with advanced scholarship that embodies the principles of lifetime health and fitness. Through visionary leadership and academic integrity, the organization is devoted to empowering professionals with the knowledge, skills and support to deliver unsurpassed professional practices within the health and fitness profession.

Administration on Aging (AoA)/Older Americans Act (OAA) Reauthorizations Listening Forums

Since 1965, the Older Americans Act (OAA) has gained recognition as a unique and highly regarded statute that has stimulated the development of a comprehensive and coordinated service system. This system has contributed greatly to enhancing the lives of older individuals, family caregivers, and persons with disabilities. In 2011 Congress will consider reauthorization and amendments to the Act effective in FY 2012.

2010 CVS Caremark Community Grants

The CVS Caremark Community Grants program awards funds to nonprofit organizations for programs targeting children with disabilities, programs focusing on health and rehabilitation services, public schools promoting a greater level of inclusion in student activities and extracurricular programs, and initiatives that give greater access to physical movement and play.

Additionally, some contributions are made to organizations that provide uninsured individuals with needed care, in particular programs where the care received is of higher quality and delivered by providers who participate in accountable community health care programs.

Medical journal retracts study linking autism to vaccine

The medical journal The Lancet has retracted a controversial 1998 paper that linked the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism. The study linked autism with the MMR vaccine.

The research had been discredited subsequently. Last week, the study's lead author Dr Andrew Wakefield was found to have acted unethically in conducting the research.

Jenzabar Foundation Student Leadership Awards

The Jenzabar Foundation is accepting submissions from institutions of higher education, nonprofit organizations, religious organizations, and self-nominations from students for their community service or humanitarian efforts during the current or previous academic year. A $5,000 grant is included with the recognition to support the student or group's future humanitarian endeavors.

The Jenzabar Foundation welcomes grant proposals from institutions of higher education and recognized U.S.-based non-profit organizations. Proposals are evaluated based on their relevance to the Foundation’s mission. The Foundation accepts proposals on a rolling basis and makes every effort to review and respond to proposals within ten weeks of receipt. The Foundation’s grant application, posted on this page, and required supporting documentation should be submitted with any grant proposal.
