A bill to promote the provision of exercise and fitness equipment that is accessible to individuals with disabilities was introduced in the Senate by Senator Tom Harkin.

This bill directs the Access Board to issue guidelines that will require fitness facilities, public and private, to provide accessible exercise equipment. Importantly, it defines accessible exercise equipment as equipment that meets the ASTM standard.

The introduction of the bill will have several positive impacts:

1.    It will generate interest about accessible exercise equipment among the various stakeholders.
2.    It may prompt the Department of Justice to act on a pending regulation that would require accessible exercise equipment.
3.    It may prompt equipment manufacturers to start making equipment that complies with the ASTM standard.
