Lakeshore's Pioneer Classic

The Pioneer Classic Basketball Tournament began in 1987 as one of Lakeshore’s first athletic events.  Named the Pioneer Classic in honor of the AT&T Pioneers who have supported the event since its inception the tournament has grown to be recognized as one of the premier regular season event in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA).

Throughout the past 26 years the tournament has served as scouting ground for national and international coaches, a forum by which newly injured individuals from the greater Birmingham, Alabama area  can see the possibilities of an athletic career they may believe is lost, and the  venue in which the Lakeshore Storm, Lakers and Sharks enjoy home competition.

This year the 27thannual Pioneer Classic Wheelchair Basketball Tournament hosted 18 teams from six different states, 207 athletes, 34 coaches and 12 referees.  The final game of the day pitted the defending champion Dallas Mavericks against the UTA Movin’ Mavs in the title game of the Championship Division. In a contest that went back and forth with too many lead changes to count, the game was decided in the final second. Trailing 62-61, UTA inbounded the ball at half court, worked the ball around the wing and made a triple-pump shot inside the paint at the buzzer to win 63-62.
