Dreams For Kids DC

Brief Description of Your Organization's Activities::

Dreams For Kids DC empowers youth living in poverty and those with disabilities by uniting them with their peers, recognizing their abilities, and allowing their voices to be heard.  The most isolated young people from every community in the metropolitan area are reminded they have something to give. While fearlessly pursing their dreams, they are leading others to their own and compassionately changing the world.

"Extreme Recess" provides adaptive athletic & recreation programs for children with physical and developmental disabilities on weekends and after school. Dreams for Kids DC puts together 1-2 adaptive clinics a month. Their clinics accommodate a large number of participants, usually 50+ so that children have opportunities to unite with their peers.

They also focus on doing highly visible clinics that garner a lot of interest and that enable them to promote and spread awareness for adaptive athletics in the area. This includes clinics with professional sports teams and highly visible organizations like the Nationals, Capitals, Redskins, Georgetown Lacrosse, DC United and The White House.

Dreams for Kids DC also seeks to put on clinics that are not vastly available in their area so that kids can be introduced to and experience sports that are new to them. This includes sports like: Sailing, Lacrosse and Adaptive Water skiing. Extreme Recess clinics can function effectively while serving both the physical and developmental communities because they ensure a 1:1 volunteer to participant ratio at each clinic so every child is engaged effectively.
