Challenged America Program

Brief Description of Your Organization's Activities::

Challenged America is a therapeutic, adaptive-sailing rehabilitation program of the charitable Disabled Businesspersons Association (DBA) dedicated to expand life experiences, improve health, develop new skills, build self-confidence and independence, and foster the competitive spirit of youth and adults with disabilities to increase employment and mainstream outcomes. Challenged America was founded in 1978  by veterans with disabilities as a rehabilitation program, utilizing sailing as the therapeutic tool.

Challenged America recently provided the adaptive sailing venue for the Veterans Affair's National Summer Sports Clinic in San Diego, and continually provide free rehabilitation sporting activities to recently returning injured troops, as well as veterans with disabilities of all ages. Sporting activities are also offered to non-veteran youth and adults with disabilities, and their loved ones. Hundreds participate in our year-round sailing program each year.

The organization provides sailing instruction to all levels and types of disabilities, as many of the devices, equipment and gear utilized in our program are developed in-house allowing those with some very unique and severe disabilities, unable to sail elsewhere, to sail at Challenged America. Instruction on adaptive sailing is also ongoing, and we are now developing a special educational and (in-house) certification program to teach sailing  instructors on how to teach sailing to individuals with disabilities.

The Challenged America team is now preparing to race this July from Los Angeles to Hawaii in the Transpacific Yacht Race, with a crew of sailors having disabilities. This will be the 3rd time Challenged America has done this most-demanding, 2,225 nautical mile race across the Pacific Ocean.
