IndependenceFirst

Brief Description of Your Organization's Activities:: 

IndependenceFirst is a non-profit Independent Living Center (ILC) directed and controlled by people with disabilities, primarily serving the four county metropolitan Milwaukee area.  Their mission is to effectively facilitate empowerment of individuals with disabilities through education, advocacy, independent living services and colation building.  Over half of their staff, management and Board have disabilities themselves.  They have an active wellness program and recently received a Silver Well Workplace Award.

IndependenceFirst provides:

Advocacy - promoting barrier removal and inclusion throughout the community and workplaces including transportation, ADA access, employment access, transportation access and access to long term care options in the community.

Services - over 20 services including but not limited to: wheelchair sports or adaptive recreation, assistive technology, employment and benefits services, IL skills training 1:1 and group, prevention and education around violence against people with disabilities, youth leadership training and skill building, personal assistance services and more.

Other areas of expertise include: Assistive technology, accessibility consultation, violence against people with disabilities, nursing home transition, community-based long term care options, employment and benefits consultation and wheelchair sports or adaptive recreation.
