Newman YMCA

Brief Description of Your Organization's Activities::

Founded in 1945, the Newman Y has developed into a cornerstone of the southeastern Massachusetts communities it serves. Its state licensed School’s Out child care service provides activities and enrichment programs for children in kindergarten through Grade 8. Its Kids' World early childhood program offers a rich curriculum of art, literacy, music, swim and gym, to stimulate and foster physical, intellectual, social and creative growth in children. Newman YMCA Summer Camp Programs are designed to meet the needs and interests of all children. Whether your child is 5 years old or 15 years old, the Newman YMCA has a program that will interest them.

Special events, such as the 5k Road Race, Walk and Kids Fun Run, Battle of the Bands, Sock Hop and Hawaiian Luau Family Night, to name a few, allow members of all age groups to socialize, enjoy music and dancing, and to have fun. The Y's professionally staffed Fitness Center as well as the group classes, active older adult, teen and youth programs are popular and effective because having FUN is emphasized above all. The 25-meter pool is always teeming with activity, between water aerobics, lap swim, family swim, swim team and swim lessons for all ages and ability levels. The Sports Department is hugely popular, with sport activities planned year-round for the whole family, such as flag football, t-ball, basketball, tennis, gymnastics and karate. The Financial Assistance Annual Campaign assures that no one will be turned away due to financial hardship.

Recently, the Newman YMCA received a grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and Bristol County Savings Charitable Foundation to purchase specialty equipment to add to their Wellness Center. One of the machines that will be purchased is a Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bike, from Restorative Therapies, which as been shown to help improve function in individuals living with limitations due to paraplegia, quadriplegia and stroke.

The Newman YMCA is the only membership based facility within a 40 mile radius to offer this particular therapy. The buildings at the YMCA are located on the ground level and both the front entrance and the Wellness Center entrance are equipped with automatic doors. The pool is equipped with a chair lift for those wishing to benefit from aqua therapy.
