Family YMCA of Black Hawk County Iowa - Together We Play Inclusion Program

Brief Description of Your Organization's Activities::

The YMCA of Black Hawk County, founded on Christian principles, is a charitable organization with an inclusive environment committed to enriching the quality of family, spiritual, social, mental and physical well-being. The YMCA is values-based, mission-driven and totally focused on building strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The "Together We Play" program in Black Hawk County provides inclusion services for children and youth with disabilities into recreational activities in the community. The program mission is to enrich the lives of all who participate and increase understanding and acceptance of disabilities as a natural part of human life.

Together We Play started in the fall of 2001 with the vision that all youth feel welcomed, included, and valued in recreational and developmental programs within the community. The important initiatives Together We Play is focused on include:

  • INCLUDE youth with disabilities into existing recreation programs throughout the Cedar Valley.
  • COLLABORATE with partner agencies and parents of youth with disabilities to help ensure a positive experience in the leisure activities of choice.
  • INDIVIDUALIZE supports and help provide respectful accommodations.
  • ADVOCATE for families and children to ensure inclusion within the activities selected.
