University of Northern Iowa's Wheelchair Sports Camp

Brief Description of Your Organization's Activities::

The mission of the University of Northern Iowa's (UNI) Wheelchair Sports Camp is to give children and youth living in Iowa with a disability an opportunity to participate in various types of athletic events using a wheelchair. Children and youth are encouraged to participate whether they happen to use a wheelchair for daily mobility or not. Participants benefit from the physical and social opportunities available at the UNI camp and by being introduced to new athletic activities in a structured environment. The camp specializes in basketball, track and field, rugby, football, tennis and rock climbing. There are opportunities for instruction, expert coaching, and the refinement of skills. Campers are encouraged to be as independent as they can, and to take advantage of the opportunity to interact with their peers.

The University of Northern Iowa's Wheelchair Sports Camp promotes wheelchair awareness and provides other healthy recreational activities for children and youth with disabilities. Activities are designed to foster independence in all campers and include walking or wheeling around campus with teammates to attend meals, other games and movies. Campers enjoy traditional camp and recreation activities while simultaneously improving daily living and hand-eye coordination skills and participating in sensory-motor-perceptual and strengthening activities.

Playing wheelchair sports promotes fitness as well as discipline, team work and camaraderie. Individuals with a disability can be very productive in school, the work place and their community while contributing a great deal to society. These young people have fewer alternatives for health promotion, and the UNI Sports Camp is one place that will open up opportunities for growth that will last a lifetime.

Many of the expenses related to offering the University of Northern Iowa's Wheelchair Sports Camp is paid for through sponsorship from various entities. This helps cover the cost of expenses and necessary equipment. If you are considering becoming a sponsor for this camp, please contact Jack Eherenman using the information provided below. Sponsorships are available at any level, from a cash donation to sponsorship of an individual athlete. All sponsors can be mentioned on all camp materials.
