North Canton YMCA of Central Stark County

Brief Description of Your Organization's Activities::

The North Canton YMCA of Central Stark County offers programs that emphasize four key values in people of all ages – honesty, respect, responsibility and caring. Through swimming and gymnastics, youth and adult sports, teen leadership programs, childcare, fitness, parent/child activities, and special events, the YMCA works to impact not just physical skills, but to increase self-esteem and development of the mind and spirit.

The North Canton YMCA is committed to the development of strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The main focus at this YMCA is fitness, exercise and fun, which is demonstrated by the abundance of cardio and strength machines offered at this facility. Any member, with or without a disability, is welcome to use any machine that they wish to use and that they are able to use. The staff will help any member learn to use or adapt the machines.

The fitness facility at the North Canton YMCA offers a variety of machines that may be especially usable for people with disabilities: NuStep, upper body ergometer, recumbant bikes, LifeFitness strength equipment. In addition, different water classes are offered, including Arthritis Foundation classes, and the pool has a chair lift.

Adapted exercise classes are free to any adult, member or not, who is interested in participating in this type of class. Caregivers are also welcome to participate in this class for free. The class is done in the gym, either sitting in a chair, or standing near a chair for balance. It incorporates music and movement in a group setting to work on cardiovascular fitness, strength, and flexibility. After this class, participants are invited to use the pool in whatever way they wish, with trained lifeguards to assist. Caregivers are encouraged to participate in this portion as well. This group also has a facilitator-led Caregivers Support Group, which meets monthly during class time.

The North Canton YMCA offers a free 10-week fitness class for cancer survivors, as well as a diabetes program. Residents from a local assisted living facility come to participate in one of the classes. Special Education students from a local high school come for swimming lessons and games. If a member needs a helper, the YMCA will issue an escort card so the helper may come in free as long as they are helping the person.
