Work Item: ASTM WK19803 - Standard Specification for the Universal Design of Fitness Equipment for Inclusive Use for Persons with Functional Limitations and Impairments

F08 ASTM Committee Header

The Sports Equipment and Facilities Committee (F08) is dedicated to developing standardization of specifications, test methods and practices for sports equipment, surfaces, and facilities to reduce inherent risk of injuries and promote knowledge as it relates to these standards. The committee shall coordinate this work with other ASTM technical committees and other organizations in this area.

Visit the ASTM Committee F08 Webpage: http://www.astm.org/COMMIT/F08.htm

Each main committee in ASTM International is composed of subcommittees that address specific segments within the general subject area covered by the technical committee. One such subcommittee of interest to IFC is Committee F08.30 on Fitness Products.

This subcommittee is currently developing a new standard titled: Standard Specification for the Universal Design of Fitness Equipment for Inclusive Use for Persons with Functional Limitations and Impairments.

The information presented in this specification is necessary to assure that the fitness product being designed is accessible, functional, and safe for both users with and without functional limitations or impairments when the equipment is operated according to the manufacturers operation instructions. Since this item is a working item, the title and scope are in draft form and are under development within the ASTM Committee meaning that there is still time for input from interested stakeholders who may not be members of the committee.

The draft scope of this development reads:

1.1 The intent of this specification is to provide additional requirements not set forth in the referenced ASTM standards for optimization of the design of commercial fitness equipment for access by users with functional limitations or impairments. The information presented in this specification is necessary to assure that the fitness product being designed is accessible, functional, and safe for both users with and without functional limitations or impairments when the equipment is operated according to the manufacturers operation instructions. Designers shall use this specification in conjunction with the ASTM standards and test methods referenced in Section 2.

1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.

1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Fitness is not just for able-bodied individuals. Fitness products that are designed for use by all individuals need to be designed with specific parameters considered.
