First Annual “Rock on the Green” 5K & 2K Walk and Spin-a-thon “Stride a little. Ride a little. Help a lot.” The Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) brings an “all-inclusive” day of fitness to athletes of all ability levels with its First Annual “Rock on the Green” – walk-a-thon and spin-a-thon. Scheduled to take place on the majestic Marina Green in San Francisco, the inspiring interplay of athletes in a 5K and 2K fun walk/Spinning® event and health fair will be held on September 12, 2009 from 9am – 12pm. Participants can choose from a variety of activities - a 5K walk, 2K walk or a three-hour Spinning® ride featuring choreographed cycling sessions led by special- guest instructors, including Johnny G, creator of Spinning and Kranking®. Krankcyles® are stationary hand cycles focus solely on upper body cardiovascular training. The event culminates with a post ride ceremony and the awarding of special prizes from our sponsors. A health fair and host of kid friendly booths will make this a memorable day by the Bay and an opportunity to support athletes of all ability levels in their pursuit of fitness and athletic achievement. Over 100 Krankcycles and Spinning® bikes have been donated for the day by the top event sponsor, Club One, a San Francisco-based fitness company that operates in the Northern California area. Barney and Barney, the 100-year-old San Diego insurance company that provides property, casualty and employee benefits programs to multinational companies and emerging businesses will be the event co-sponsor. Other sponsors include: Credit Suisse; FRS; Regulatory Economics Group; Access Metal; The Bob Spinner Family; Mark and Mary Stevens; Bay Area Four Star and Philadelphia Insurance. Funds raised at “Rock on the Green” benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation. CAF raises money to help people with physical disabilities lead active lifestyles through physical fitness and athletics. Monies will provide training and adaptive sports equipment to people experiencing physical impairments, post-rehabilitation support to military personnel and veterans and educational outreach programs to increase awareness about athletic opportunities for individuals who have disabilities. To date the event has raised $98,000 with about 50 people signed up to participate. As a first time event, CAF expects they will wind up with 300-400 participants once the event draws near. CAF has recently named the first recipient who will benefit from the funds raised at the event. Robert, a young amputee who recently overcame a battle with bone cancer, will be receiving support and funding for the purchase of a prosthesis that will enable him to walk again. With his leg gone but spirit in tact, Robert’s main concern was being able to walk to school on the first day of eighth grade. More about Robert's story can be found here. To register visit the Rock on the Green website beginning June 1, 2009 or call Gail Baumgarten at (925) 838-2227. Spin-a - thon participants can compete in teams or as individuals but must commit to raise a minimum of $300.
