Brief Description of Your Organization's Activities::

KEEN is a national, nonprofit volunteer-led organization that provides one-to-one recreational opportunities for children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities at no cost to their families and caregivers. KEEN's mission is to foster the self-esteem, confidence, skills and talents of its athletes through non-competitive activities, allowing young people facing even the most significant challenges to meet their individual goals.

KEEN provides opportunities for one of the hardest to serve populations of cognitively and physically disabled children and young adults ages four to nineteen.  Our athletes have autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and other significant physical or intellectual disabilities.   For those athletes who have extensive cognitive and/or physical disabilities or those who are non verbal, KEEN is the only organization that can accommodate their special needs.

KEEN’s model works because unlike other programs:

  • We accept any child no matter the severity or type of disability.  Our primary goal is to find those hard-to-serve kids and provide a place where they can participate fully and succeed in fun, confidence-building recreational activity.

  • All KEEN programs are free of charge.  Due to the financial burden of additional health care expenses experienced by our families, KEEN is committed to offering all of our programs at no cost to the athletes, their families or caregivers.

  • KEEN provides a one-to-one, and if needed two-to-one, ratio of volunteer coach for every athlete.  Adaptive sports leagues and other community offerings are not always suitable for kids who find it hard to compete or understand a team environment. Our one-to-one approach provides the individual attention that allows our athletes to succeed.

What distinguishes KEEN is the individualized attention we are able to provide.  Working one-to-one with a trained volunteer coach, a KEEN athlete is able to participate fully in our programs and receive the specialized attention needed for promoting positive change.  Our core program, “KEEN Sports” takes place in a gym with a variety of sports equipment available. Athletes and coaches may throw a basketball or kick a soccer ball, or they may take a walk around an outdoor track. Many athletes love to bounce on our large therapy balls, and others enjoy speeding across the floor on our 4-wheeled scooter boards.

In addition to KEEN Sports, affiliates may offer other programs including KEEN Swim, which brings the KEEN formula to the pool, KEEN Tennis, KEEN Bowling, KEEN Fit, and even KEEN Music. Such diverse activities as Tai-Kwan-Do and Yoga have been adapted to fit KEEN’s approach. Check with your local affiliate to see what programs are offered in your area.
