RERC on Recreational Technologies and Exercise Physiology Benefiting Individuals With Disabilities

Brief Description of Your Organization's Activities:: 

The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Recreational Technologies and Exercise Physiology Benefiting Individuals With Disabilities (RERC RecTech) at University of Illinois-Chicago is a five-year grant funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) of the US Department of Education. The primary mission of the RERC RecTech is to expand new knowledge and research on recreation technology for people with disabilities, and to disseminate technology development through education, training and collaboration with private sectors.

RERC RecTech activities include identifying existing and needed recreational and fitness technologies for people with disabilities and determining feasibility, efficacy, and safety of various recreational and exercise technologies in improving health and function for people with disabilities.

Key Performance Measures for RERC RecTech:

  1. Increased ACCESS to fitness and recreational environments for people with disabilities.
  2. Higher levels of PARTICIPATION in fitness and active recreational activities by people with disabilities.
  3. Development of strategies to improve ADHERENCE to fitness and active recreational activities for people with disabilities.
  4. Demonstrated improvements in HEALTH and FUNCTION through healthier, active lifestyles for people with disabilities.
